Cutting the Thread Chapter 1

“The mosquitoes have been bad this year my lady.” A young woman looked up from where she sat on the woven grass mats on the floor. She had been writing something on a small desk that sat in front of her.

“Yuuka,” the corners of her mouth pulled up in an ironic smile. “Truly,” She rubbed her hands over her red spotted forearms loosely covered in large bell shaped sleeves, “much worse than I have any recollection of. Your mother’s cream does help with the itch.”

The woman who had initiated the conversation smiled, careful not to show teeth, as that was not done among the upper classes. The priestess was not of an upper class, but she has the bearing of a princess. It was hard to believe that she could have been an orphan before dedicating herself to the temple. She was a tall young woman, with skin paler than that of anyone else in the city and hair the color of ripe wheat. Though the priestess was not ugly, neither was she a striking beauty; her strangeness made her beautiful in a city full of olive skinned, black haired women.

There were whispers that she was not human at all, but a halfblooded loai. Yuuka knew better though; she had been the one to find the priestess washed up on the beach, half drowned, among the ship’s debris and dead sailors. The shipwrecked orphan girl who had been taken in by the High Priest of Maduve had grown into an impressive young woman.

“I will tell Mother you are grateful, Priestess.” Yuuka presented the young priestess with a ceramic jar corked with wax.

“I will always be grateful to you and your mother.” These seemed like simple words of thanks, but Yuuka heard the weight behind them.

“It was years ago, Priestess, no need to go reminding everyone of it. Besides it is my mother’s job to save people’s lives. She says she has a duty to war with Lord Death.”
She stood and turned to leave, stopping just before reaching the door. “Is it too forward of me to ask if you’re still getting flowers?”

The priestess frowned. “I do not mind you asking, you are my friend, Yuuka.” She sighed then answered, “My nighttime visitor prays on my mind.” While Yuuka was glad to be called a friend by the priestess, she wondered if the woman had any real friends, or only persons like herself who respected her but were too intimidated by her to claim a relationship.

“It has been innocent until now has it not? You’ve been getting them since spring, so maybe it’s nothing to trouble yourself about. Has your father said anything?” She asked referring to the high priest of Maduve who adopted the priestess almost ten years ago.

“He believes it to be one of the novices, perhaps a girl I was kind to. Only those on official business, novices, and priests are allowed in this part of the temple.”

“The high priest is probably right. Don’t worry too much, you’ll make yourself sick and get wrinkles.” Yuuka bowed humbly to the priestess before leaving and slid the door closed behind her. Despite Yuuka’s words the priestess was concerned about her nighttime visitor. Even if the intent was innocent, what type of person would creep into a woman’s room under cover of darkness? She felt as if her privacy had been invaded, and surely if it was a grateful novice as her father had proposed, the flowers would have stopped appearing after a week or more, it was now high summer and the blossoms were still beside her pillow every morning.

NaNoWriMo Anyone?

Well, since I have no readers I suppose this is strange, but I keep posting in hopes of. So if anyone is interested I'm hoping to participate in the NaNoWriMo this year. I tried the year before last and got the first 10 days or so, then gave up, but, try, try again, you know.

My attempt this year will be my Tengarra story (as yet unnamed) that I have already written the preface for as well as two character profiles. I plan to do at least Seok and Shula's profiles before November, so look forward to that (or at least I do because there are no readers. I'm really feeling the absence of interest right now.)

Anyway, if anyone is wondering what the NaNoWriMo is there's a handy link for you. National Novel Writers Month has been delegated to November (and you can read all about its history on the site) where you have exactly 30 days to flesh out 50,000 words (the average length of an English novel). The beginning is usually the easiest part, like I said, I got almost halfway through the month on my last attempt. After that it gets more challenging, and the daunting part of that 50,000 really sets in. I will probably fail, but try anyway, on top of studying my Japanese.

Inspiration?

Just in case anyone who reads this blog later (I have absolutely nobody reading it now) is wondering how I come up with the stories I plan to post here, I'll say it right out front... every one of these is a fan fiction. Now before you go and boycott my blog because of that little tidbit, listen to this; I hate reading fan-fics myself, as they are usually horribly written as well as unoriginal, but even though each and every one of my stories start out fan-fic, I assure you, they are thoroughly my own before I post them. In fact if anyone can come up with the story(ies) that I base them off of I give you kudos, because you are very perceptive and probably read a whole hell of a lot (like I do). So please feel free to comment on it if my story seems too similar to something else you've read, because I'll want to know!

Character Profile Series #2

Gijo

There are two sentient races on Tengarra. Loai and humans. Once there was a third race called magicians, but roughly 400 years before this story takes place their race died out. Loai differ from humans in several ways, most noticeably that their ears stick aout from the sides of their hears in long points and their hair colors vary in shade from a light orange color to dark red, while human hair grows predominately in dark brown and black. The loai lifespan is considerably longer than humans' as well.

Gijo is an important part of high priest Cain's party, as he introduced them to Lakin, as well as having connections to high loai society. Outside the group little is known about any of the four members, Cain being the most well known because of his childhood in the temple. The two met after Cain had taken his rights as priest and had once again sneaked off temple grounds to gamble in the local taverns. The two were often seen together at various gambling spots and soon struck up a friendship.

Gijo is actually a nickname, his real name being Zisizohaja. Zisizohaja is a loai word meaning something that is unneeded or useless. His loai mother was at one time a concubine to the emperor, but was thrown out of the palace when her half human son was born. She was often violent with Gijo, and blamed her bastard son for her downfall. She  had an older son, named Kiume, who all but raised Gijo in place of their mother. He was called Ndugu (brother) by Kiume, who refused to call him unwanted.

Being half loai, Gijo did not inherit much from his loai mother save his distinctive red loai hair. Despite this obvious outward marker of his breeding, Gijo does not have the energy of a loai and needs no limiters or seals to interact with humans, most not even seeming to notice his strange hair color at all.

Specs:
Name: Zisizohaja (Gijo,) or Ndugu
Species: Human/loai
Gender: Male
Position: Gambler
Height: 6' 2"
Body Type: Medium build, well muscled
Hair Color: Dark red
Eye Color: Red
Characteristics: Womanizer, friendly enough, but tends toward sarcastic, Enjoys gambling, never shrinks from a fight, actually seeming to enjoy them, but is surprisingly strict against cheating

Character Profiles Series #1

Cain Highborn

Cain is a high priest in service to the Three. There are a total of four high priests in the entire temple system, but Cain is unique among them in that he has not dedicated himself to one of the specific gods as the other three high priests have done. Any who have seen him working a temple ceremony or have heard of his incredible gifts with the purification spells and seals that are used in the holy work have no doubt that he is a chosen messenger and servant of the Three.

Cain's personality and actions outside of the formal temple ceremonies led him to be disliked among many of the temple's upper level priests and dedicates. Two of his three fellow high priests firmly believe that he should never have been instated into his current position, but none can deny his abilities, nor can it be said that the Three do not speak to him as they do the other high priests.

It was Cain's arrogant demeanor that gave him the surname Highborn. Little is known of Cain's past, before he appeared at the entrance of Spiral Way Temple as a fourteen year old child. He made few friends among the acolytes and initiates of the temple because of his acerbic tongue and selfish manner, but to the dedicates he showed a side that was completely devoted to the welfare of the temple and the serving of the gods. In these duties not even his most diligent enemies could find fault. His aloofness led most to believe that he was the unwanted child of some rich merchant, or councilor, and many called him the highborn bastard behind his back. Everyone knew better than to call him that to his face.

Making the mystery of his background all the more intriguing, Cain has blond hair. The gold color of his hair was something that had never been seen in Tengarra since the Magicians died out over three hundred years ago. It is said that the pagans, far to the west over the mountains have that color hair and different color skin as well, but as there is no actual documentation that anyone who had set out to cross the harsh mountain ranges had ever succeeded, let alone returned, the speculation that Cain was one of the western pagans soon died. If Cain himself knows his own origin he shows no inclination to tell anyone.

Name: Cain Highborn

Gender: Male
Position: High Priest of the Three
